Some of you perhaps know that I am a mobile DJ. Have been for over 20 years now. Look over to the left and see the link to our site.
I loooooove what I do. I consider myself the best in the business because I have an expansive knowledge of music, know how to mix it for any type crowd and am well-mannered yet exuberant.
I always tell folks that it's really not a job. Well, except for the roadie work...the load in and load out. Now that's changing as well.
I have officially retired my CD collection and CD players to my music library. I would carry about 800 CD's to a gig. Four crates and a suitcase full of CD's in plastic sleeves.
As with all innovations in the business I wait until the bugs are worked out. There's nothing worse than technical malfunctions.
Well, the laptop DJ has been tested (by others, thank you) and is now a very reliable alternative to CD's. More than reliable, it's a gas to play with and a breeze to retrieve any one of the more than 20,000 songs I now bring to a gig.
Best of all, my roadie load has become lighter. Of course the crates of CD's are gone. And, instead of a large (3'x3'x3') road case containing 2 dual CD players and a mixer I simply bring my laptop.
Redundancy is a must though. You have to have back up in case the laptop goes down. When it was CD's all you needed was extra CD players. The CD's weren't going anywhere. A much different situation with a laptop where your mixer and music is all in one small unit.
I didn't want to invest in another laptop and was in the market for another iPod to compliment my current 80 gig version. I picked up a 160 gig iPod and this simple but slick looking iPod mixer from Numark.
I can plug my wireless mic into this mixer along with the laptop. I can sling both systems over my shoulder in a soft briefcase.
Plus I now get to load all sorts of eclectic albums on my new iPod for my personal pleasure.
I'm just so thrilled I had to share. Now, about those big speakers and heavy amps. Bose has a solution for that as well but I'm not ready to take that step yet. It's that redundancy thing.
