Russell Brand

Russell_brand0
The cutting edge guy that I am, I've been aware of Russell Brand for a couple of years now.  I first heard him on his BBC 6Music show.  Shortly thereafter he moved to the most popular BBC station, Radio 2.  You can listen to his Saturday night show a number of different ways, be it live, on demand or by podcast (without the music).
His loose occupation title is comedian, though he  is much more than that.  Aside form his radio program he has hosted television shows and acted in movies (in the UK), and has even written an auto-biography, My Booky Wook . The book is being well received as it details his life of heroin abuse and sexual addiction with honesty and humor.
Now America is discovering this manic talent.  Think a hipper, more crazed Robin Williams.  His first American movie is Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  And he's again, getting nice reviews.
In the last few weeks he's done stand up shows in LA and appeared on The Tonight Show of which you can see parts of below.
Look for this guy to make a big splash in the US in the next couple of years.  In the meantime, check out some of the many other clips of him on YouTube, and listen to his radio show. Then you can say you heard it first here.

She & Him

One of my favorite albums of 2006 was M Ward's Post-War.  One of my current favorite actresses is Zooey Deschanel, who's appeared in such films as Almost Famous and Elf.  So when the two of them get together, not just as a couple but as a musical outfit, I'm simply thrilled.
They go by the moniker She & Him and their debut album is simply called Volume One.  His wonderful guitar work, her breezy, innocent vocals and some sweet songwriting and good choice of covers make this the perfect soundtrack to your spring.
Here they are performing on Conan's show last night, backed up by Yo La Tengo.  Nice.

RIP Danny Federici

After a 3 year battle with Melanoma cancer, founding member of Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band, Danny Federici died last night.
Federici was keyboardist and accordion player.  He, along with original drummer Vini Lopez asked Bruce to join their band.
His contribution can be heard on almost every Springsteen song, my favorite moment being 4th Of July (Sandy).
After dropping off the current tour before the holidays he played with the band for a few songs in Indianapolis last month.  Most of us thought he was on the road to recovery so this news is certainly a bit stunning and sad.  The band has postponed dates for this weekend down south.
Rest in peace Danny.

Music Video For The 21st Century

For a couple of years now the go to source for cutting edge, indie  music has been Pitchfork.  This site and others such as Stereogum and Coke Machine Glow have taken the place of traditional music magazines.  Already gone is the paper version of roots music magazine, No Depression.  Look for other magazines to fold as record company ad dollars disappear even more and these new online publications grow.
Now Pitchfork is taking aim at MTV with today's debut of Pitchfork.tv, a music video site featuring song videos and plenty of exclusive live sessions.  If you're imagining the lousy look and sound of YouTube think again.  The videos looks super clean and the sound is great.   Not to mention the vast array of videos already in rotation.
This new medium of internet TV won't have mass appeal until the regular Joe can wirelessly send the internet onto his main viewing TV.  After all, one can only sit at a desk or have a PC sitting on their lap for so long.  In fact, that future is actually here with the recent release of Apple TV version 2.
In the meantime dig the new medium.  Now someone needs to write a song called The Internet Killed The MTV Star.
