A Christmas Gift

So, Michael Heaton of the Plain Dealer was kind enough to mention me in his Friday Magazine column on December 21.

Every year I put together such a disc.  Back in the old days it was a cassette.  I give it to friends as my Christmas gift.  Now I thought I'd make it available to you here as well.

It's really not my top 19 songs or anything.  There's always so many great songs year in and year out.  You can hear 4 and a half hours worth on my Live 365 show.  See the post below. It's just a good mix of songs that should be played on commercial radio but aren't. 

Simply download the rar file.  You'll need the program here to open it.  From there you can play it on your PC, put it on your MP3 player or burn it to CD.

Cleveland Finally Gets A Few Inductions

So the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum, and more importantly, the powers that be in NYC, have decided that Cleveland deserves to host the induction ceremonies more than just the one token time ten years ago in 1997.
Beginning in 2009 and every third year thereafter the induction ceremony will be held in Cleveland!  The announcement was made yesterday at City Hall.
It was good to hear news clip explanations of the announcement by a childhood friend of mine Frank Sullivan, CEO of RPM and on the board of directors at the Rock Hall.

The Hall is on a roll with this announcement and the plan to build an archive building at Cuyahoga Community College.  Fund raising for that project is well under way according to Mr. Sullivan.
Now the only thing they've neglected to do right is hire me!  Oh, trust me, I've tried on numerous occasions.  I should have pleaded with Terry Stewart, CEO of The Rock Hall, when we chatted at the Sharon Jones/Pipettes show a few weeks back at the Beachland.  He and I were some of the few that kept switching venues to catch as much of both shows as we could.

Maybe I need a campaign from my friends out there to let them know of the asset they are missing.  Go to it troops!  Ha!

Proof Of My Obsession

So, for my birthday last week my sisters gave me these framed notes they found amongst my mother's collected artifacts of our youth. 

The notes date back to November of 1965. I was seven years old.

The one on the left is my runaway note.  The one on the right explains the circumstances. 

It seems I was upset that they wouldn't let me play my records!
I love having proof now of my early obsession with music!

Buzzard Ads

So I just came across a total of nine WMMS ads that John Gorman, the old PD, has upped to You Tube.

GET DOWN DAMNIT!

Here's an ad for WMMS using one of Murray Saul's weekend get downs he did live at one of the World Series of Rock concerts at Cleveland stadium. Who's Murray Saul? Every Friday at 6PM he would do these crazed rants about the weekend. Hilarious and energized us listeners, set to party our weekend away. There's a CD comp of some of his get downs that came out a couple years back, though I don't own it.

All Songs Considered

Another amazing resource for music is NPR's Music site.  It was the All Songs Considered site but has recently undergone a major facelift.  There are easily over a hundred live shows archived.  You can even catch the shows live when they happen.  Some of the shows are even downloadable as MP3 files. 
Right now, they are taking votes for your top 5 albums of the year as well.  Speaking of which, look for my top album and singles lists. In the next couple of weeks.
Of course, the best way to enjoy the site is by subscribing to the podcasts so you can listen at your leisure on your MP3 player.

More Buzzard Hype from the PD

Today the Plain Dealer published a fantastic multi-media look at Gorman's book, The Buzzard, and an overview of the station in its' heyday. 
It contains audio segs with Gorman plus all sorts of audio clips includng a great interview with Bono and The Edge at the time of the  War album and tour.  I flashed back to that show at Music Hall and Bono waving the white flag.
