So the concert fling started with the first annual Kuyahoga Fest at Blossom on Thursday August 3. One observation...I think the name of the fest was a mistake. Simply changing a C to a K just caused confusion when trying to look up infgo on the net. Anthony...change the name next year...that is if you still have a job now that Live Nation (Clear Channel) is on the verge of buying HOB. That would suck for not only you but all of us.
My highlights of the day...
1. Seeing Midlake, a band from Denton,Texas who play with a progressive 70's folk type vibe performed on the smallest of the three stages in the afternoon rain. The short lived rain brought an end to the heatwave, cooled the 100 or so fans who watched, and was a perfect setting for their melancholy fare.
2. On the lawn as the sun went down and Deathcab For Cutie broke into REM's Cuyahoga. I stood on the lawn and sang along like a fool as everyone looked on...totally unaware of what the song was....kids...
3. The joyous experience that is the Flaming Lips while standing with the throng in the pit.
Also got some more press from my great friend Michael Heaton. He covered it in his weekly Minister Of Culture column .
The next show was exactly one week later at the same venue. Widespread Panic came to town. As usual, interest in this band around these parts is mostly nonexistant. Thus the reason I couldn't even unload my extra pit ticket. So I headed down by myself, easily selling it to a good guy from Columbus whom I met in the parking lot scene. Here's the set list:
| : Old Neighborhood* > Greta* > Knocking 'Round The Zoo*, Pickin' Up The Pieces*, You Got Yours* > Diner* > Proving Ground*, Radio Child*, Ain't Life Grand* |
| 2: B of D, Second Skin, Travelin' Man* > Traveler's Rest* > Vacation* > Can't Change The Past* > Drums > Astronomy Domine Jam* > This Part Of Town* > Makes Sense To Me* > Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys* > Imitation Leather Shoes* |
E: From The Cradle*, The Take Out* > Porch Song* |
Onto show number three....which actually was this morning. Yes, this morning! Tom Waits tacked on a last minute show to his very short tour. A stop at the House of Blues here in Cleveland. Tadcked on because he played Akron earlier in the evening. Hitting the stage here at 1:15am and winding it down at 3:15am. Obviously this was a special occasion and though I am dragging today...there's a smile on my face. The show went like this:
Goin' Out West
219 (My Baby's Leaving on the)
Way Down in the Hole
November
Blue Valentine
Big Black Mariah
On the Nickel
Cemetery Polka
I Wish I was in New Orleans
Johnsburg, Illinois
Metropolitan Glide
Heartattack and Vine / Spoonful
Make it Rain
Circus
Singapore
It Rains on Me
Don't Go Into that Barn
Ramblin' Man
Whistling Past the Graveyard
Buzz Fledderjohn
Finally, talk show host Mike Douglas passed away a couple of days ago. He got his start here in Cleveland. I went to nursery school with one of his daughters and attended her birthday party so long ago. Douglas had some amazing musicians on his show and I for one cannot wait until someone gets thgose performances out on DVD like the Cavett one's that came out last year.
In a strange twist of fate I stumbled across this clip of Tom Waits on the Mike Douglas show.
